Chrome Application Assistant · Beta

Install once. Apply with CareerPainter beside you.

Use this guide to download the assistant, add it to desktop Chrome, connect your account, and complete your first employer application while keeping every final decision in your hands.

  • Desktop Chrome 116+
  • CareerPainter account
  • About 3 minutes

Before you start

Three things to have ready.

The assistant is currently distributed as a signed-off beta package for Chrome’s Load unpacked workflow. It is not yet installed through the Chrome Web Store.

01

Desktop Chrome

Use Google Chrome version 116 or newer on macOS, Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS. Mobile Chrome does not support desktop extensions.

02

A stable folder

Chrome loads the extension from the folder you select. Keep that extracted folder in a permanent location after installation.

03

Your account

Sign in to CareerPainter in the same Chrome profile where you install the extension so pairing can finish cleanly.

Installation

Add the assistant to Chrome.

Follow these steps in order. Your download contains the complete Manifest V3 extension—Chrome does not download or execute remote code for it.

  1. 1

    Download

    Download the CareerPainter ZIP.

Save the versioned package somewhere easy to find, such as your Downloads folder.

    Download extension Current package: careerpainter-application-assistant-0.1.2.zip
  2. 2

    Extract

Unzip it into a folder you will keep.

On macOS, double-click the ZIP. On Windows, right-click it and choose Extract All. Open the extracted folder and confirm that manifest.json is directly inside it.

    careerpainter-application-assistantmanifest.json
  3. 3

    Open Chrome

    Turn on Developer mode.

Enter chrome://extensions in Chrome’s address bar. On the Extensions page, switch on Developer mode in the top-right corner.

Chrome pages cannot be opened by normal website links, so type or paste the address directly into Chrome.

  4. 4

    Load

    Select the extracted folder.

Choose Load unpacked, select the folder that directly contains manifest.json, and confirm. The CareerPainter Application Assistant card should appear.

If Chrome reports that the manifest is missing, you selected the folder above or below the correct one.

  5. 5

    Keep it handy

    Pin CareerPainter to Chrome’s toolbar.

Select Chrome’s Extensions puzzle-piece icon, then select the pin beside CareerPainter. Clicking the CareerPainter icon opens its persistent side panel.

Connect your account

Pair the side panel with CareerPainter.

Pairing gives the assistant a short-lived credential for your structured application profile and saved roles. It does not share your CareerPainter password with the extension.

  1. 1

Open the side panel. Select CareerPainter from Chrome’s toolbar.

  2. 2

Select Connect CareerPainter. An authorization page opens on CareerPainter.com.

  3. 3

Review and approve. Select Connect extension while signed in.

  4. 4

Return to the side panel. The status changes to Connected and your saved applications become available.

Your first application

Prepare the form, then make the final call.

CareerPainter assists on employer-hosted application pages. LinkedIn and Indeed first-party apply flows remain intentionally disabled.

01

Start in CareerPainter

Open a saved role with a valid employer application URL and select Start Application.

02

Allow this employer site

When Chrome asks, grant access only to the current employer origin. CareerPainter does not need permanent access to every site.

03

Scan and review

Use the side panel to scan the visible form. Check every review item before filling the ready fields.

04

Submit yourself

Attach files or complete manual controls when requested, read the final page, and select the employer’s Submit button yourself.

Ready to fill

A high-confidence match from your CareerPainter profile. You can still inspect it before filling.

!
Needs review

An ambiguous question, generated suggestion, file control, or answer that deserves your confirmation.

Manual

A sensitive, legal, authorization, sponsorship, demographic, attestation, or unsupported field CareerPainter will not answer for you.

Where it works

Employer application pages, with platform-aware help.

Dedicated adapters cover the major application systems below. Unknown employer forms use CareerPainter’s confidence-gated universal form assistant.

  • Workday
  • Greenhouse
  • Lever
  • SmartRecruiters
  • iCIMS
  • Taleo
  • Ashby
  • Employer-hosted forms

Installing an update

Keep the same folder to keep pairing simple.

Because this beta uses Chrome’s unpacked-extension workflow, updates are manual until a Chrome Web Store release is available.

  1. 1

Download the newest ZIP from this page and unzip it.

  2. 2

Replace the contents of your existing CareerPainter extension folder with the new files. Keep the folder itself in the same location.

  3. 3

Open chrome://extensions and select the Reload icon on the CareerPainter card.

  4. 4

Open the side panel. Reconnect only if CareerPainter asks you to.

Troubleshooting

The common fixes are quick.

Open the question that matches what you see. Reload the employer page after changing extension access or updating the package.

Open CareerPainter settings
Chrome says the manifest file is missing or unreadable.

Unzip the download first. When you choose Load unpacked, select the folder that directly contains manifest.json—not the ZIP and not a parent folder.

I installed it, but cannot find the side panel.

Confirm you are using desktop Chrome 116 or newer. Open the Extensions puzzle-piece menu, pin CareerPainter, then select its toolbar icon. You can also confirm the extension is switched on at chrome://extensions.

The assistant will not connect to my account.

Sign in to CareerPainter.com in the same Chrome profile where the extension is installed. Open the side panel, restart Connect CareerPainter, approve the pairing page, and return to the panel. Disconnecting and reconnecting issues a fresh short-lived credential.

No fields are detected on the employer page.

Wait for the form to finish loading, reload the page, reopen the side panel, and scan again. Confirm that you are on the employer’s external application form and that Chrome granted CareerPainter access to that employer site. LinkedIn and Indeed first-party apply pages are intentionally unsupported.

Some fields remain empty after I select Fill.

This is expected for low-confidence, file-upload, sensitive, legal, and unsupported controls. Review the side-panel status beside each field, complete manual items yourself, and scan again after moving to another application step.

How do I remove the assistant?

Open chrome://extensions, find CareerPainter Application Assistant, and select Remove. Then delete the extracted extension folder from your computer. Removing the extension also clears its Chrome-managed local state.

Built around user control

CareerPainter prepares. You decide.

The assistant does not request browser history, cookies, debugger access, web-request monitoring, or permanent access to every page. It does not click the final Submit Application control.

  • Site access is requested when you start on an employer page.
  • Sensitive and legal fields remain manual.
  • Suggested written answers stay reviewable.
  • LinkedIn and Indeed first-party apply flows stay blocked.
READY WHEN YOU ARE
